Barlast interviewed and reviewed by Overblown. [15.5.2017]
"Their debut album, Ihantola, is a joy, taking the listener on a journey of unexpected peaks and valleys of experimental and exploratory music."

Barlast reviewed in German by Global Music. [6.10.2018]
"We like Ihantola very much. Even after several listens we discovered new facets that we hadn't noticed before and new details came to light. Barlast offers unusual music, but it is by no means hard to listen to."

suomijazz.com gives 4/5 stars to the Ihantola record. [9.4.2017]
"I very much admire Barlast's pursuit of simplicity and naturally breathing surfaces."

Neon Filler picks Barlast as one of the highlights in Tallinn Music Week. [21.4.2017]
"In parts it felt like we were at a grand 18th century dance in keeping with the setting. In others such as song Cs-137 we descended to a much darker place more in keeping with a Scorsese thriller."

Thoralf Koß from musikreviews.de gives the score 12/15 to the Ihantola album. [8.6.2017]
"Harmony and cacophony play together in Barlast's musical sandpit."

Barlast (Swedish for ballast) creates spacious new music. The silence can be heard between the notes. Everything unnecessary is stripped away. Only the name remains as ballast.

Barlast (Swedish for ballast) creates spacious new music. The silence can be heard between the notes. Everything unnecessary is stripped away. Only the name remains as ballast.

The Finnish group Barlast released their debut album Ihantola (LLS03/Texicalli Digital) in February 2017. Most of the album was recorded in the round attic tower of the 110 year old Ihantola building in Helsinki. If you listen closely, you can sometimes hear the soundscape of the hip Kallio district.

With folk music and jazz as the starting point the ensemble creates new music defying genre borders. At times the music is strictly arranged, at times the band indulges in completely free improvisations.

  • Philip Holm – Double bass
  • Heikki Hänninen – Guitars
  • Minna Koskenlahti – Drums, flute
  • Sanna Salonen – Soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, mänkeri

Barlast luo uutta ilmavaa musiikkia, jonka taustalla kuuluu hiljaisuus. Tarpeeton on riisuttu pois. Ainoastaan nimestä tuli painolasti.

Barlastin debyyttilevy Ihantola (LLS03/Texicalli Digital) julkaistiin helmikuussa 2017. Suurin osa levystä on äänitetty livenä Helsingin Ihantola-talon tornissa.

  • Philip Holm – Kontrabasso
  • Heikki Hänninen – Kitarat
  • Minna Koskenlahti – Rummut, huilu
  • Sanna Salonen – Sopraanosaksofoni, bassoklarinetti, mänkeri

Barlast skapar ny världsmusik. Allt överflödigt är bortskrapat. Endast namnet förblev som barlast.

Barlast publicerade sin debutskiva Ihantola (LLS03/Texicalli Digital) 2017. Största delen av skivan spelades in live i Ihantola-husets vindtorn i Helsingfors.

  • Philip Holm – Kontrabas
  • Heikki Hänninen – Gitarrer
  • Minna Koskenlahti – Slagverk, flöjt
  • Sanna Salonen – Sopransaxofon, basklarinett, mänkeri
